Gottman's Method Couples Therapy Level 2 Practice Test

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as articulated by John Gottman, refer to negative communication patterns that can predict the breakdown of relationships. These behaviors include Criticism, Defensiveness, Contempt, and Stonewalling. Each of these patterns can create a toxic environment within relationships, leading to increased conflict and dissatisfaction.

In this context, Acceptance is not one of the Four Horsemen. Rather, it embodies a positive aspect of communication and emotional connection between partners. Acceptance allows individuals to understand and embrace each other's differences, fostering an atmosphere of empathy rather than confrontation. By reinforcing acceptance, partners can counteract the negative effects of the horsemen.

Criticism, Defensiveness, and Stonewalling are all detrimental communication behaviors that contribute to relational distress. Recognizing Acceptance as the outlier highlights its importance as an antidote to these destructive patterns, reinforcing healthy communication and understanding in couples therapy.
